Animal Consciousness: The Interplay of Neural and Behavioural Evidence

We consider the relationship between neural and behavioural evidence for animal consciousness. critically examine two recent studies: one behavioural. The first, on crows, finds different activity depending whether a stimulus is reported as seen or unseen. However, to implicate this in consciousness, we must assume that specific conditioned behaviour report of conscious experience. second study, macaques, records behaviours strikingly similar patterns unconscious perception humans. confounds are only ruled out human subjects, presupposing substantial similarity humans macaques. Taken together, studies reveal sense which research rely each other. Looking ahead, these types could prove be either mutually reinforcing undermining. science consciousness needs both evidence, ideally obtained part single coordinated programme.
